The Great Lighthouses of Ireland


The Great Lighthouses of Ireland (price €28), accompanying the RTÉ series, is a collection of striking images and fascinating stories about the iconic lighthouses that dot our coastline and the extraordinary men and women who lived and worked in them.

Covering an encyclopaedic range of subjects, including history, biography, engineering and science, art, wildlife and social history, the book by David Hare features stories about the raid by the IRA on Fastnet Lighthouse, the heroic rescue of the Daunt Rock lightship and the construction of Ireland’s nuclear-powered lighthouse.

In its chapter on technology, the book features the Baily Lighthouse Optic (see right), exhibited at this museum.  

The Great Lighthouses of Ireland contains 250 stunning photographs and archive documents that bring to life the romance and history of these beacons of light that inspire endless fascination.
