Wed 2 March – The Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin (In aid of the Maritime Museum Development Fund).

About the Maritime Museum:

The Maritime Institute of Ireland was founded in 1941 by Col. Tony Lawlor, who realized more readily than most, how dependant this country was upon the sea and ships to carry the necessities of daily life. The Maritime Museum is housed in the former Mariners’ Church in Dun Laoghaire.  Built in 1837, with accommodation for 1,400 persons, the church was designed to meet the needs of the sea-farers whose vessels sought shelter in the asylum harbour of Kingstown.

The Museum is operated by a dedicated team of volunteers. The building was found to be in very poor repair and extensive renovations have been undertaken including, the roof and outside walls, the stained glass windows removed, repaired and reinstalled, all the internal plaster removed and replaced, ceilings refurbished and extensive dry rot treated. A sophisticated lighting system has been installed. The current phase will include, heating, wheel chair access and toilets for the disabled and the building of new displays for the maritime collection. Funding has principally come from central government administered by the Office of Public Works and from private donations and fundraising events. The Museum is closed at present but it is planned to open later in 2011 for 5 or 6 days per week.
