The Dublin Branches of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, the Irish Institute of Master Mariners, the Nautical Institute and the National Maritime Museum of Ireland are pleased to present a lecture by: Mr David Aris On The History of the Liberty Ship

In the early part of WW2 the UK was losing ships to the U boat threat at a rate which could not be sustained by the full production of UK shipyards so Winston Churchill, sent a Mission, to the USA to purchase, or build some sixty , 10,000 TDW ships per annum.  The UK Government authorised the building of two new yards, one at Portland, Maine, and one at Richmond, California and in less than 2 years both these yards had built 30 ships to the UK specification.  By the end of the war 2710 Liberty ships had been constructed.
