Most of the early pioneers of diving operated on wrecks in Ireland from the time of the Armada through to the beginning of helmet diving. This pioneering work explored several important wrecks of the Armada Santa Anna Maria , Lady Charlotte and Enterprise They recovered mainly cannon because of their huge value. Salvage of coins also attracted state of the art equipment and divers to Ireland. One of the inventors of dive machinery was a Clareman and associate of Daniel O’Connell – Tom Steele. Even the first demonstration of scuba gear in Ireland was in Galway in 1959. In more recent years the equipment used for offshore oil leads technology in off shore oil and gas exploration.
