The National Maritime Museum of Ireland is operated by the Maritime Institute of Ireland assisted by a Community Employment Scheme of the Department of Social Protection.

The Maritime Institute of Ireland fosters an appreciation of our maritime heritage. To that end we operate the museum, host lectures, issue newsletters and a journal, maintain a library, host and support commemorations, promote and conduct research.

On display are over 150 photographs taken by the Expedition photographer Frank Hurley, a full size exact replica of the James Caird; the lifeboat that proved so critical to the rescue, and much, much more.  The exhibition tells a survival story like no other: Irish-born explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-1917.
